Relative Contraindication of Phototherapy

Contraindication of phototherapy needs to be considered to lower the negative side effects and make the treatment effective. Light therapy or phototherapy is effective for patients who suffer from pruritus, vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and also other forms of dermatitis. 

Relative Contraindications

Phototherapy is one of the effective ways to get rid of skin problems. If you want to take this therapy as your main medication, you need to know whether you are in these conditions or not. If you are breastfeeding or pregnant, avoid to have PUVA treatment, or if you are underage, make sure you see doctors for the best advice. When you do light therapy you may stand for 10 minutes or more. If you do not have this ability to stand unassisted for about 10 minutes, avoid this treatment. 

Light therapy is also not suitable for those who have very fair skin, type 1 and 2. If you have this type of skin, avoid getting PUVA treatment. People who previously suffered from melanoma or other skin cancers is also suggested to avoid this phototherapy. 

UVB Treatment

There two light waves used for light therapy, UVB and also UVA. UV A is less popular than UV B because it is less effective, and give more negative side effects to the patients. Narrow UVB treatment that is done for children will be done carefully under experienced nursing and medical supervision. 

UVB light is effective for patients who suffer from Psoriasis. Studies show that it can clear around 75% of psoriasis disease on their skin. 

To get the most of this treatment, you will have to take 10 to 40 treatments. It will be conducted three times a week depending on your skin conditions and your response to the treatment. The dose will be increased if your response is good. The entire body is exposed with the UVB light except the genital and face. See the contraindication of phototherapy before doing it.

Complications of UVB Treatment

You may experience several acute complications after getting the treatment. Some side effects will be gone without further medication. Patients might experience acute sunburn effect, photophobia, photosensitivity, and also worsening skin problems. Some herbal medications or antibiotics will worsen the side effect, see your doctors take the best for you.  While long term complications included photo-aging like elastosis, freckling, wrinkling, atrophy, or xerosis. You may also have a wider chance of getting skin cancer such as melanoma. Consider the contraindication of phototherapy to make this treatment works well.
