Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition affecting the skin, occur as flaky skin and upstretched patches of scaly. It is including the scalp. The skin cells on it make thick, dry and powdery scales that look like dandruff. It is called plaques. It can reach the hairline, forehead, beard area, neck and behind or inside the ears. No less than 50% of people with psoriasis have at least one flare-up on the scalp. The level of scalp psoriasis is varied, from mild which can be better on its own until the tough one, which needs regular treatment for about a few months such as light therapy for skin. After it gets treatment, it then is controlled from flaring by taking a special shampoo or moisturizer.
There is no specific cure for psoriasis, but there are some steps to handle it. Putting medication directly to the scalp is the most common way of medication. But if there is more than one area of scalp psoriasis, then putting medication for scalp psoriasis by mouth or injection might be the better way. There are some cases where the direct medication doesn’t respond well, then it can be replaced with other treatments or combine one treatment with another. The very first step is to get rid of the scales. The purpose is to make the medication can be absorbed easily. The way to remove the scale starts with applying the OTC product to unstiffen the scale and make it easy to peel off. The OTC product should contain salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, lactic acid, urea, or zinc pyrithione. After applying thoroughly, the scales can be loosened with a brush. Then put a salicylic acid shampoo to remove the scales. While the scalp is still damp and in a moisture state, apply the cream.
The methods are not stopped by only removing the scalp. The medication for scalp psoriasis procedure is just started. On cotton balls, put petroleum jelly and place it in the ear to keep the medication away from it. The medication usually has a side effect such as skin irritation or temporary hair loss, so make sure to use them sparingly. Then part the hair and drip the medication to it with a lotion or oil. After finding the right position, rub an ointment or cream to the scalp. To keep it from dust and other distractions, use a shower cap to cover the scalp for a short time. It can help the medication for scalp psoriasis to work better.
